Not bad for a medium that’s been dead for years. To say nothing of a blogging service everyone said would die horribly after Russians bought it.

So I should maybe say something, but honestly I’m too tired to think of anything clever. And I’ve probably typed it before.

Only I don't have much to say I haven’t said in previous anniversary posts – especially the previous one.

Anyway, yes. We are wrapping up Year 9 on LJ. As Shonen Knife has said, we are very happy you came.

The bloggery will continue until morale improves. Or until you all quit LJ. And even then I’ll probably keep at it.

WHERE AM I?

Some of you may have noticed September was a quiet month for me, and October is turning out to be almost as quiet. In fact, it’s only quiet on DW/LJ.

Part of it had to do with a very busy travel schedule and work deadlines more intensive than usual, and also a little bit of burnout in terms of current events, which have really been variations on similar themes, and I just didn’t have much to say.

But yes, it’s also because I’m off on other sites as well.

So I thought I’d give a quick rundown on my various locations if yr keen on following my antics elsewhere and not already following me on one of the other places (though there is a lot of crossposting anyway).

Which I assume is because Obama and Vlad Putin are fighting again. Or something.

THERE’S GOING TO BE SOME CHANGES AROUND HERE

Not that you’ll notice, unless you enjoy the icons I use on LJ.

I let my paid LJ account expire over the weekend.

Which means I’m back to an ad-supported Plus account. The only real downside (apart from saving USD20 a year) is having my icon library slashed to 15, which isn’t a huge deal, though I wish they’d let me choose which 15 I can keep.

On the plus side, you’ll get lots of ads about the latest movie and music releases. Isn’t that nice?

Anyway, as I’ve said before, I’m not leaving LJ, but it does feel like LJ is on its way out as an entity as more people abandon ship. So there’s no sense in sinking money into it.

The $20 question is, of course, if I’ll upgrade Dreamwidth to a paid account. I haven’t decided yet, but honestly, I’ve gone this far on a basic account, and the only feature I ever really made use of from my premium LJ account was the icon space. And let’s admit, no one’s really sure how long Dreamwidth will be around.

That said, it’s not off the table (as they say in The Beltway), so we’ll see.

Meanwhile, broadcasts will continue as normal.

THE IDES OF MARCH (2013 EDITION)

This blog turned eight years old on Friday.

Or maybe I should say my blogging activity started eight years ago Friday. "This blog" is a loaded term, seeing as how it comprises two continuous LJ blogs and a parallel Dreamwidth blog.

Anyway, given the state of LJ today, just being here feels like an accomplishment. A lot of people I’ve met here have moved on to Facebook or Dreamwidth or Tumblr, often out of anger. Every time LJ gets a DDoS attack, or introduces a new change, it’s usually the last straw for somebody, and it gets a little quieter.

I’ve remarked on this in past anniversary posts – usually by explaining why I’m still here. Which typically breaks down to two reasons: (1) the things that are driving people off LJ don’t bother me very much, and (2) it’s been generally quiet here since I started this thing.

Those two reasons are still in play. But so, I admit, is a third reason: inertia. LJ is still my preferred format for posting anything more complicated than a GIF or a quick music video (and I still rely on a lot of those here anyway) – long rants, serials, and other things that don’t work as well on Facebook or G+. Put another way, I need a place to put stuff like that, and if not on LJ, where?

Okay, yes, Dreamwidth, but that’s more or less the same thing, since I can cross-post easily enough. (I’m doing it right now, in fact.)

But I confess I do tend to spend more time on Facebook these days. I’m making more new friends there than I’ve made here in a long time, and interacting with them more. But again, it’s a limited platform.

So I don’t intend to quit LJ/Dreamwidth, if only because I have a need for this kind of format. But I might go ahead and let my paid LJ account lapse.

Meanwhile, for those of you planning to bail on LJ I suppose it’s appropriate to mention where else I can be found at the moment.

Actually I rather like the Tumblr format, and I’d probably move this blog there if it wasn’t for Tumblr being even less reliable than LJ. (You think LJ has outage problems? You should see what happens when Tumblr fails. And they don’t even have the luxury of being able to blame Russian Mafia hackers.)

THE IDES OF MARCH (2012 EDITION)

Today completes Year 7 of my career of bloggery.

And also kicks off Year 8.

I’m not sure that I have much to say beyond what I said last year, though I did learn that I’m only capable of doing one proper blog at a time.

"Proper" meaning something like LJ or DW. I can also do FB, Tumblr and G+, but they're relatively low-effort. And I still do more here than I do there.

Other than that, the only other relevant topic is LJ’s DDoS issues, and I’ve already said what I have to say about that.

So here we are. Or what’s left of us. That’s how it is in this thing we call social networking. People come. People go. Either way, I’m happy you came.

On with the bloggery.

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO DR LOVE BANANA?

For those of you who didn’t already subscribe to the Naughty version of my LJ, be advised that it’s too late now. Making Love Banana has been retired.

I’ve stated my reasons for it here.

What does that mean for you?

Well, for one thing, you may have noticed that ever since I started MLB a year ago, the frequency of Sexy content on this here blog has decreased somewhat.

So you’ll be seeing a lot more of stuff like, say, vintage 60s topless dancers shimmying to Shadows Of Knight.

Starting right about now.

( Seriously. I'm not fooling ... )

Maybe not that much more of it. I don’t know yet.

But one reason I created MLB was to have a separate place for it in case that’s something you didn’t want when you signed on here. On the other hand, all of you seem like responsible adults to me. Also, everyone’s dropping LJ for Google Plus and Facebook anyway, so it never hurts to spice up the programming a little.

So here’s the deal: yr going to see nudity here (albeit tasteful, always tasteful) from time to time, but I’ll employ the Cut function when necessary – not so much to avoid offending anyone as to avoid making yr Friends Page more NSFW than it already is. (See? Tasteful AND responsible!)

That said, since I’ll probably limit those kinds of posts to the weekend, when most of you aren't around anyway (because you have lives and stuff), I don’t expect to use the Cut function that often. Because what’s the weekend without a little sin, skin and shenanigans?

You’ve been warned.

My opinion hasn’t changed since the last DDoS attack.

THE WAR ON LIVEJOURNAL

There has been talk about LiveJournal, the DDoS attacks and the exodus of some users to Dreamwidth, Blogger and other sites not currently on the Kremlin hit list (or whoever is behind it).

Personally, I can’t be too hard on LiveJournal, partly because it’s not their fault they’ve been singled out for attack, and partly because I know enough about DDoS attacks to know that whatever safeguards you put up to defend against them or mitigate their impact, if someone wants to take you offline badly enough, they can and will do it, even if just for a little while, unless you have the resources of, say, a major ISP.

Also, the revelation that the wave of attacks is apparently targeted at Russian bloggers posting political stuff makes it hard for me to abandon LJ on general principle.

Okay – the fact that I’m a paid user who just renewed his account a week ago is also a factor. So it’s not like I’m being noble about this or anything.

Anyway, back when a lot of people were convinced LJ was going to go belly up when SixApart sold it to SUP, some people defected to Dreamwidth, or set up accounts there just in case. I’ve had my own account here (or rather there), for a couple of years now, though the only thing I’ve done with it is create a backup of my current LJ (and my previous LJ, so it’s my entire bloggery career all in one place – hurrah!). And one good thing to say about Dreamwidth is that it enables easy crossposting to LJ (provided yr not crossposting embedded videos – it seems a little flaky on that score, but it’s manageable. Also, cross-posting user icons seems to be out).

So, the obvious solution seems to be to broadcast from Dreamwidth and keep both blogs running that way. Which is what I’ll be doing – at least for a little while, to see how it works. From the reader’s POV, you won’t notice the difference apart from the little cross-post notifications.

And it goes without saying that if yr on Dreamwidth, you can add me at any time.
