DEF "YR FUNNY CHINESE UNCLE" TOUR 2010, PART 4: HARDLY ART, HARDLY STARVING
For the Chicago leg of the trip, we booked a room in the Congress Plaza Hotel, which is one of those old downtown hotels where there’s a fine line between rustic charm and old age.
We also learned that if yr going to stay downtown, yr better off not renting a car unless you plan to do a lot of driving around to places not easily accessible by public transport – and if that’s the case, you might be better off staying outside of the city (which is cheaper anyway), except that if you DO want to go downtown you’ve got America’s third-worst traffic congestion to deal with, which is a disincentive for going, and then you won’t be able to walk around taking pictures of buildings all day.

And so on.
It was the parking costs that made us decide to skip renting a car next time. The only real downside is having to convince our friends to come get us just to drive us to Superdawg, and we hate to be a bother, you know ...
Anyway, whatever time wasn’t spent eating, sleeping, chatting and packing was spent in the Art Institute of Chicago, which we missed last time we were in town due to it being closed for the holidays. We mostly checked out the special exhibits, the coolest of which (for my money) was the Ancient Mexico sculpture collection and the Henri Cartier-Bresson photo collection.
Also, I spent some time looking at Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks. I could look at that thing for hours writing alternate scripts in my head.
And that was Chicago, a city that you really need more than 48 hours to enjoy.
Next: Airline humor!
My kind of town,
This is dF
