In high school, I divided my obsessions between Chicago—until Terry Kath fatally shot himself in 1979 ("Don't worry, it's not loaded.") and Frank Zappa, where I collected his out-of-print LPs and even went to see him twice. (Remember the days when you didn't have to mortgage your house to go see a rock concert?)
Censorship, you say? After high school I was highly involved in Frank's (and Dee Snider's) battle against the PMRC or "Washington Wives." One has to imagine if Frank had lived—after all, he was only 52 when he died—he would have been a vocal force against the current administration.
I even named my golden retriever Tipper, telling people Tipper was a better name for a dog than a politician's wife; I was surprised to hear several years that Tipper [Gore] had been a rock drummer. (Couldn't find a clip of her band, but I did find a clip of a band named Tipper Gore.)
