I agree with your list. For John Wayne, I see him sort of like an old school Keanu Reeves. He's there doing his thing and sometimes the rest of the film manages to work an sometimes it doesn't. Two John Wayne films I like even though I don't consider myself a fan: Stagecoach and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
