DEF XMAS PLAYLIST #10: IT’S SNOWING MEN
If yr like me, when you think “Christmas”, you think, “the 80s” – partly because the decade was so blatantly fuelled by Reaganomics-powered material greed that we no longer had to feel guilty about Christmas commercialism, and partly because of George Michael and Andrew Ridgley.
Now, while it’s true that we’ve selected a few songs technically recorded in the 80s, they’re not what you would classify as “80s genre” – that is to say, songs associated with 80s pop culture in general (i.e. new wave, Miami Vice, big hair/mullets, aerobics videos, breakdancing, etc). And after eliminating stuff yr probably already aware of (i.e. Wham! and that one by The Waitresses), I found myself – as usual – having to decide between Max Headroom and The Weather Girls’ “Dear Santa (Bring Me A Man This Christmas)”.
In which case it’s a no-brainer.
Available here.
I’ve always had a kind of respect for The Weather Girls. Great voices, greater attitude. They didn’t call themselves Two Tons Of Fun for nothing, you know. And what truly captures the spirit of the season like large black gay icons? Sadly, this video isn’t as camp as “It’s Raining Men”, but the large-haired dancers are a nice touch.
Besides, I never really got Max Headroom, though this is probably because I only really knew about him from the New Coke commercials, so I thought the TV show was a cheap cash-in of a trendy ad character. Of course, it turned out to be the other way around. I still don’t like the Christmas song, though.
Honorable mention to Captain Sensible’s “One Christmas Catalogue”.
It was acceptable in the 80s,
This is dF
