BETTER LIVING THROUGH TELEVISION CHARACTERS

Cross-posted from [profile] thewhyfive. This week’s mission: Top 5 Favorite Television Characters!

Fairly easy this week, although I don’t watch all that much TV anymore. So this is going to look a little nostalgic.

TOP FIVE DEF TV CHARACTERS

1. Doctor Who
Any incarnation, though I prefer the Tom Baker Classic. David Tennant’s doing rather well, mind.

2. Agent Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks)
The fact that I spent six months walking around with a handheld tape recorder spouting off messages to “Rudy” (my version of Diane) says it all.

3. Gilligan
He’s me, basically.

4. Frank Black (Millennium)
I liked the idea of a character who gets in the heads of serial killers and has to live with what he sees, and try to keep his family life in perspective, all while he’s getting caught up in conspiracy groups obsessed with the year 2000 and the Biblical implications thereof.

5. Archie Bunker (All In The Family)
Probably one of the best TV characters ever. I liked that he was presented more as a real person than a 2D stereotype.

Honorable mention: Gomez Addams, Uncle Fester, Dr Johnny Fever, Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Gil Grissom, Hiro Nakamura, Buddy Cole, Samurai Jack

The sun always shines on TV,

I always felt Millennium was underrated as a show. Granted, by Season 3 it was getting too X-Filesy, but it captured pre-millennial angst quite well, and Frank Black was really great as a character. I like what one critic said about it: "So dark you'll need to listen to Nick Cave records afterwards to cheer you up."

another vote for Millennium here. not only Frank Black is an well-wrtten character, it has one of the best music scores on TV.

and of course "Twin Peaks"... "Diane, never drink coffee that has been anywhere near a fish." :)
