DEF ISLAND TOUR: PHUKET/SINGAPORE EDITION

This week’s bloggery will be coming to you from the resort island of Phuket.

That’s in Thailand.

It’s all work-related, if yr wondering. I’ll be in Phuket for a couple of days to make speeches about the telephones, then it’s off to Singapore for the rest of the week to MC some panel sessions with gripping titles like “Test & Measurement Issues for RF And Capacity Planning For Wireless Broadband Networks”.

So if yr building a WiMAX network in yr community and need tips on how to provision enough capacity to stream video on it without dropping packets or something, I may have some tips for you by Friday.

FUN FACT #1: The last time I was in Phuket was for holiday in 2002. That was the time I fell off a banana boat and nearly drowned because I was too fat for them to pull me back on board. I came back to HK, got on a program and dropped 60 pounds. The Humiliation/Near Death Experience Diet, I like to call it. I should write a book. I hear the weight loss industry is quite a racket.

FUN FACT #2: Phuket is reasonably famous for being the location of a James Bond shoot: The Man With The Golden Gun. There’s even an island called James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay – it’s the one where Scaramanga hid his giant solar-powered death ray, you'll recall. The bride and I went there.  It's made of limestone, shrubbery and AWESOME.

FUN FACT #3: I’m posting this in Singapore to kill time during my layover. The girl in the coffee bar told me to expect Phuket to look different than the last time I saw it because of the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami. A lot of what I might remember has been washed away and rebuilt. So even any R&R I get may be more sobering than fun.

Okay.

Off to the islands,

This is dF

Color me envious, Mr. Def-amanga.

FF1...whatever it takes. Right?

FF2...A junket to Phuket sounds like it's made of awesome.

FF3...That will put a melancholy bent on a trip to a beautiful place. Be aware of where the high ground is, my friend.

At times like this, I do like my job. I may be working, but it's a hell of an office.

But yes, the tsunami lurks. That was the first time I ever saw a major natural disaster on TV where my first response was to call people I knew to make sure they were still alive. They were. Many of their friends and relatives weren't. I've heard first-person accounts that made me weep openly. So nature gets nothing but respect from me.
