MY DRAGON BALLS, LET ME SHOW YOU THEM
The trailer for the live-action version of Dragon Ball is out.
I, for one, am not encouraged.
I’m a fan of both the manga and the anime, so a live-action version was always going to have a lot to live up to. And we’ve talked before about how movie versions of comics can only stay so true to the original source, and that this is not always a bad thing.
That said, Dragon Ball is one of those comics where the art is inseparable from the story, and doesn’t translate well to photorealism. Which is why the film so far looks more like a Dragon Ball rip-off than an authorized version. Maybe it’s unfair to judge by the trailer, but it looks like yr average super-powered kung-fu film to me – which might still be fine for people who have never seen the manga or the anime, but for people like me, it’s going to be a harder sell.
Unless they keep all the bits where Bulma shows off her panties, of course. Then I’ll give it a try. Because her panties are central to the storyline.

However, I suspect that’s not going to fly in America for a film that will be shooting for a maximum PG-13 rating.
