YOU WANNA TALK ABOUT THE REAL JUNK?

Lux Interior is dead at 62.

Damn it.

I’ve been a fan of The Cramps for over 20 years now. My first exposure to them was the Bad Music For Bad People comp, and it was love at first listen. From the music to the camp theatrics informed by a genuine love for 50s B-movies and fetish fashion, The Cramps had everything you needed in a great rock band – not least an insane lead singer.

I saw them play in Nashville in 1991. It looked more or less like this:

Only Lux wore a lot less, and did obscene things with the microphone.

It’s still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. I wanted Nick Knox’s job ever since.

Thanks for everything, Lux.

And condolences to Poison Ivy.

Tear it up,

This is dF

EDITED TO ADD [a few hours later]: I came across the photo after the initial post. It's a great picture, so I added it.

ahhh...The Cramps!! Your coolness factor just rose considerably...

Nobody I know has even heard of them and I get strange looks when I start singing Bikini Girls With Machine Guns!

I'm not surprised. As many records as they sold, The Cramps were never mainstream and not even in the way that The Ramones eventually became (i.e. I don't think Lux and Ivy got their own Simpsons cameo). It's hard to believe – and a little depressing – that so many people will see the news and say "Lux who?" and then see some video footage and go, "Well, no wonder he's dead."

Screw 'em. Very few celebrity deaths bum me out, even when I like them. This seems to be one of them.
