GAY MARRIAGE LEGAL AND SAFE IN CALIFORNIA – BUT ONLY FOR FIRST 18,000 COUPLES

ITEM: Gay marriage is still illegal in California. Except for the first 18,000 couples.

But you knew that.

All the usual arguments apply. But admit it – you know the situation has reached a weird stage when:

1. New England and Iowa are more progressive than California.

2. The state says that marriage is only for straight couples – except for gay couples lucky enough to get their applications in early. What’s even stranger is that the anti-gay crowd seems generally happy to let those 18,000 slide.

Conclusion: gay marriage is a threat to heterosexual family units and general social stability, but as long as you have a gay marriage quota system and cap it at 18,000, yr safe. Or something.

Well, why not? It’s not like the Prop 8 crowd ever relied on anything like logic and common sense.

Meanwhile, to keep the anti-Prop 8 gang’s spirits up, here’s Tom Robinson in 1979, showing you just how far we’ve come. And how far we still have to go.

PRODUCTION NOTE: There’s at least a couple of different versions of this song, but I prefer the Secret Policeman’s Ball version, as that’s the first version I heard. Plus, it packs more punch as a singalong, don't you think?

INTESTINAL MODELING IS NOT A VERY GOOD JOB TO HAVE

Speaking of the Secret Policeman’s Ball, here’s one of my favorite sketches from The Secret Policeman’s Other Ball – Peter Cook annoying John Cleese (who I now allegedly resemble) with apocryphal factoids.

Is that a fact,
