The weekend wasn’t all about shaving, you know. I also saw some movies.

Coraline
Pretty good adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s book about a girl who discovers her doppelganger parents, although Gaiman’s storytelling vibe is swapped for Henry Selick’s big production numbers, so overall, I’d prefer the book. But Selick pretty much sticks to the story, only adding one new character, supposedly to give Coraline a way to voice her thoughts without mumbling to herself.

Blindness
Based on the Jose Saramago novel in which a plague causes people to go blind. The story centers on the wife of an opthamologist who is immune but follows her husband to the quarantine camp, where things deteriorate quickly into chaos and depravity. It’s a good idea in theory, but despite the story’s jab at bureaucracies, I can’t believe anyone in 2009 would stick a bunch of newly blinded people in a decrepit hospital with no instructions or guidelines as how to take care of themselves. On the other hand, I’m now intrigued by Saramago, who I’ve never read. I may just give him a try.

Zombie Strippers
In which a company owned by George W Bush (now on his fourth term) creates a virus that reanimates the dead in order to ensure US soldiers fighting all 11 wars can still fight after they’re killed. The virus spreads to an illegal strip club and the strippers find they become much better dancers after they become zombies. Oh, and it’s supposedly based (very, very loosely) on Ionesco’s The Rhinoceros. Hence, it’s batshit insane to the point where the usual plot holes, bad acting and cheap FX just don’t matter. Easily the silliest movie I’ve seen all year.

Dead can dance,
