APPROPRIATE USES IN NAZI ANALOGIES #1: IF YOU BURN BOOKS, YR A F***ING NAZI

Why yes, it is in fact Banned Book Week in the US again.

Here’s a map of book challenge cases in the last couple of years. The American Library Association figures it’s a very low estimate, as 70-80% of challenges aren’t reported to the ALA.

Meanwhile, if you missed it the first time, and wonder what the big deal is when there’s plenty of places besides public libraries to get these books, please read this.

My father in law thought librarians burn books on a regular basis. Like, that was part of the job. I couldn't respond to that for a few seconds. WHAT??

Boss Lady and I agree that if a book is banned or challenged, it stays in the library. If it does not circulate for a few years, then we might get rid of it. zero circulation = discard pile, no matter what book it may be.

i went to a private high school, and most of the books that were required reading at my school were books that were banned in a lot of public schools. whenever a parent complained about a teachers choice in book, the school would take the stance of "if you don't like the curriculum, you can put your kids in public school".

Interesting distinction. Though I'd wager that in 2009, the willingness of a private school to stand by its book selection would be proportional to its desire to retain the business of the parents. If you see what I'm saying. Or does it not work that way?

I see And Tango Makes Three is at the top of the list, again. EWhat have these people got against a pair of gay penguins?
