USE YR ILLUSION (ROAD SAFETY EDITION)
Sep. 10th, 2010 11:12 pmITEM: A Canadian safety group comes up with a novel idea for getting drivers to slow down in school zones: 3D illusion art of a girl chasing a ball in the road.

It’s an interesting idea, though the obvious concern is whether inattentive or particularly stupid drivers (and they are legion) would opt to either slam on the brakes or swerve off the road.
The safety group that came up with it say they thought of that:
Preventable says a detailed risk assessment was undertaken to address such concerns.
Of course, the other problem is that drivers who use that route regularly might learn to ignore it – and then one day it’s a real kid in the road.
Which just goes to show: never underestimate the ingenuity of drivers to find ways to cause accidents.

Before drivers approach the image, they pass a "School Zone" sign, crosswalk, an extended curb and a sign by Preventable that reads, "You’re probably not expecting kids to run out on the road."
