You know and I know there’s a million playlists for you to choose for your Halloween shenanigans.

But if you need one focused on witches … well, there’s probably a million of those too, but I just happen to have one right here that’s fresh from the cauldron.

NOTE 1: If your favorite witch song isn’t here, that’s likely because I curated this from a pool of 284 songs that adds up to over 15 hours of music. And that’s not counting the hundreds of black/death metal songs about witches. So you’re lucky I whittled this down to three (3) hours, is what I’m saying.

NOTE 2: I’d planned to keep it at two hours, but, well, see Note 1.

NOTE 3: Feel free to add your own witch songs in the comments.

NOTE 4: Why witches? Why not?

Because you can never have enough Halloween playlists, can you?

METHODOLOGY: Who knows? I could say I was inspired by the new Exorcist film, but I haven’t seen it. I really just started with the Halloween theme, which was obviously inspired by the opening of “Tubular Bells” (which was used in the original Exorcist movie), and, well, it kind of just flowed from there. More or less.

Anyway, Happy Halloween and stuff.

Halloween is coming up. You need a playlist. There are thousands to choose from. Here’s the one you’d get if I was DJing your Halloween party this year.

NOTE: For Song 24, that should be Goddo, not Gobbo. It’s correct in the band profile, so ask Spotify, not me.

Q: Is this a Halloween playlist?

A: It probably depends how you feel about clowns. But having recently watched “It”, I stand by my decision.

Yes, I know, Halloween playlists are a dime a dozen. On the other hand, there’s no shortage of material – this playlist was 3.5 hours long at one point.

(Which of course means that if you think I overlooked some obvious candidates, (1) it was probably intentional on my part, and (2) the songs you’re thinking of may have been on the list before I started editing. Maybe they’ll make next year’s list.

Anyway, if you need something to entertain the trick-or-treaters in your community for two hours, this playlist just might be what you’re looking for.

Keepin’ Halloween alive,

We’re counting down to Halloween. And it is here. No one can prevent that.

Not even the North American Hallowe'en Prevention Initiative.

Luckily, they’re not actually trying to stop it. It’s a joke song parodying all-star charity songs. But it’s also an actual charity song for UNICEF. And the guest list is pretty impressive. Names you might know include:
  • Win Butler and Régine Chassagne (Arcade Fire)
  • Beck
  • Elvira, Mistress of the Dark
  • Malcolm McLaren
  • Nardwuar the Human Serviette
  • Peaches
  • Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett (Rilo Kiley)
  • Roky Erickson
  • Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth)
  • Russell Mael (Sparks)
  • Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs)
So there you go.

Happy Halloween, kids.

It’s always tempting to give all the traditional Halloween monsters equal representation in a Halloween playlist.

If that’s not an option, of course, you can always go for a one-stop-shop song that puts all of the monsters in one place. Usually at a party. And usually in the late 1950s.

And thanks to Bert Convy, you don’t have to always rely on Bobby “Boris” Pickett for that.

Then again, it’s probably Bobby “Boris” Pickett’s fault this song (and a few dozen more cash-ins like it) even exists.

And of course you’ve got to have a wolfman for Halloween – even if it’s mainly a metaphorical one.

A couple of songs back, we heard about the dangers of dating Dracula’s daughter.

Presumably, of course, dating any female vampire is potentially dangerous – but very hard to avoid once she sets her sights on you. As The Dickies will now demonstrate.

See what they did there?

We’re counting down to Halloween with music here.

And this wasn’t scheduled for the 2013 Halloween playlist, and I may have even posted it in the distant past as a Halloween song.

But now that Lou is gone, I pretty much have to include it this year.

And if it’s a repeat, screw it. It’s a great song from a great album.

Just like you can't have a Halloween without vampires or Dracula, you can't have a Halloween playlist without Screaming Lord Sutch.

PRODUCTION NOTE: Not to be confused with the recent Redd Kross song of the same name.

It’s interesting that zombies have become a part of mainstream culture now. It used to be a niche horror gimmick. Now it’s a successful TV series on AMC and a tentpole blockbuster starring Brad Pitt.

You can even do zombie comedies now (see: Shaun Of The Dead, Zombieland). Or even zombie romantic comedies (see: Shaun Of The Dead [again], Warm Bodies).

None of which has anything to do with this song, except it’s about zombies, and we’re counting down to Halloween here.

I took this pic this morning whilst sitting in the local coffee shop in Disco Bay.

Two of these people are corpses. Can you spot them?
