ITEM [via Interstellar Barbarella]: Hugo Gernsback invented the Radio Controled Police Automaton in 1924.

In other words: Proto-Robocop!

The amusing part is that the cover image on the left doesn’t make it clear that those are criminals that the Police Automaton is cracking down on. They could be, say, union workers. Or G20 protesters. Or suits attending a demo.

So more ED-209 than Robocop, then. Still, the spirit is there.
