dEFROG ON 45 #36: BERTHA’S GOT BACK
Sep. 15th, 2011 10:08 amLooking back on this series so far, one of the interesting aspects of it for me is looking at all these songs I listened to as a kid, and what was it about them that appealed to me in the first place. And broadening on that question, I also get interested in the discovery aspect – i.e. how did I find out it existed?
Which I mention because there were three main ways to discover music in the mid-70s for the average primary-schooler: radio playlists, yr parents’/siblings’ record collection, or word of mouth. And it seems when I look back at the kind of songs that warranted word-of-mouth promotion, it was often stuff like Jimmy Castor Bunch.
Because, you know, big butts are funny as hell when yr ten. (Or if you have a sense of humor like Jimmy Castor.)
Anyway, I liked this song for all the obvious reasons as a kid, and I like it now because I appreciate the funk. And fat-bottomed girls. And because it’s a bit demented. If this came out today, it wouldn’t be on a major label, and it would never get radio airplay apart from a few morning drive shows. That said, it wouldn't matter as long as it went viral on YouTube.
Times change, eh?
Me like,
This is dF
