Or, “The Old Guard Called, They Want Their Rockinrolls Back (slight return)”.
For about a year now, I’ve been vaguely aware of a band called Off!, which was supposed to be a supergroup of 80s punk legends. And I’m usually wary of anything that includes “supergroup” in the press release, so I didn’t pay much attention.
Then, when I was digging up info on the new Redd Kross album, I saw that Stephen McDonald was a member of Off!, as was Keith Morris (as well as Dimitri Coats from Burning Brides and Mario Rubalcaba from Rocket From The Crypt. So out of curiosity I followed the link.
And was duly blown away.
Nobody – well, hardly anybody – makes music like this anymore: fast, loud and angry songs that take less than 90 seconds to play, with equally angry dissonant guitar solos (when they can be bothered to have guitar solos), and a dark sense of humor.
With cover art by Raymond Pettibon, even.
It’s the closest thing I’ve ever heard to a Black Flag/Circle Jerks revival – which is appropriate, as Morris fronted both bands. So if anyone’s entitled to bring that 80s SST sound back, it’s him.
Anyway, after a string of EPs, their debut LP is out now.
Listen to the lead-off track.
See?
This is hardcore,
This is dF
