Seeing as how it’s an election year, and seeing as how every presidential candidate is doing a cheesy Christmas campaign ad anyway, we’ve got just enough time to slip in a political Christmas song. It’s called “Christmas In Washington”. And naturally, it’s by Mr Steve Earle.

WARNING: Contains Joan Baez (this particular version, anyway – the original Baez-free version is available on El Corazon).

What do I have against Joan Baez? Nothing personally – I just prefer Earle’s vocals. He sounds exhausted, fed up and disappointed – which is exactly what this sort of song calls for.

No more FDRs,

Well, it’s getting late, and you’ve all got things to do, so we’ll wrap up the playlist with a special Christmas message from ... Mr Lee Ving.

And you saw that one coming all the way up Wabash, didn’t you, [profile] garbagecanmusic? Yes you did.

[Available on recent editions of one of the greatest punk records ever made.]

Obviously this playlist just scratches the surface – you’d have also been hearing from Throwing Muses, Wesley Willis and others if anyone had bothered to put YouToobs versions up on the web. And if I’d been a little less slack, you might have also heard from Lou Reed, Korn, Cheech & Chong and, um, AC/DC. Then again, you probably got off light.

Anyway, for more good suggestions for holiday classics that don’t suck, try here, here or, for the most comprehensive list, here.

Okay, that’s it. And no, I won’t be taking Christmas off. From work, yes, but to from the bloggery. Probably no one will be around to read it, sure, but what else is new?

On duty,
