Continuing our coverage of cover songs vs the originals:

THE SONG:
“It’s Raining Men”

THE ORIGINAL: The Weather Girls

COMMENTS: Two tons of fun, indeed. Great singing, delivered with the sense of fun that such a ludicrous song requires. With added cheap 80s aesthetic value, and a whole lotta fit men in Speedos. Camp, fun and oh so gay. Something for everyone, then.

THE COVER: Geri "Ginger Spice" Halliwell

COMMENTS:
Musically, it’s almost identical to the original, but in terms of vocals, Geri is okay but doesn’t have the voice or personality to really claim the song for herself. The self-effacing Flashdance parody doesn’t help. And I’m taking off points for the Bridget Jones’ Diary footage.

WINNER:
No contest. The Weather Girls own this song.

Next week: Tony Joe White vs The King!

Following up on last week’s entry, I wasn’t going to do a separate entry for the remake of Ben, until I saw Crispin Hellion Glover singing to him in one of the oddest videos ever made.

Not a scene from the movie, but a DVD extra that Glover made himself. It gets inexplicably sexy near the end. Nuff said.

Just the two of us,
