I CAN’T LEAVE YOU ALONE FOR FIVE MINUTES
Apr. 12th, 2008 02:51 pmAnd we’re back in Hong Kong. It’s been a busy week, so I’m catching up on my feeds to see what’s been going on:
ITEM: A US government-funded medical information site that bills itself as the world's largest database on reproductive health has quietly begun to block searches on the word "abortion," concealing nearly 25,000 search results.
ITEM: More than 200 US colleges have created homeland-security degree and certificate programs since 9/11, and another 144 have added emergency management with a terrorism bent.
ITEM: Universal Music Group is arguing in court that states that if you've ever received a promo CD from UMG, and you don't still have it, you're a pirate. Why? Because throwing away promo CDs is “unauthorized distribution”.
ITEM: Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago) tells atheist Rob Sherman that not believing in God is “dangerous to the progression of this state. And it’s dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists!”
ITEM: A professor reveals the results of a quiz he’s been giving college freshmen students in recent years. Among other results, some students thought that Islam was the principal religion of South America, that Roe v. Wade was about slavery, that 50 justices sit on the U.S. Supreme Court, that the atom bomb was dropped on Hiroshima in 1975.
ITEM: Federal prosecutors in Washington, DC charge Los Angeles adult-film producer John Stagliano with seven felonies for selling porn videos such as Milk Nymphos and Storm Squirters 2: Target Practice to consenting adults.
Ah. Business as usual, then. Oh, and there was something about Bush admitting on ABC News that he personally approved torture against terror suspects. No surprise there, either. Hopefully that rated more coverage than the New York Mets getting Rick-rolled.
Carry on waterboarding,
This is dF
