HONG KONG (May 1) – It can now be revealed that Teaf Def concluded a major property deal on Tuesday. Team Def’s headquarters in Disco Bay was sold for an undisclosed amount to a German couple planning on importing their parental units to Hong Kong. Following due diligence, regulatory clearance with the SEC and the anti-trust division of the respective govts, and approval by 80% of shareholders and the board of directors, the deal will close by the end of this month.

Which is why we spent most of our Labour Day holiday hunting for flats.

BACKGROUND: We own two flats in HK – one of which we’ve been living in for about seven years, the other about a ten-minute walk down the road. We sold the one we live in so that we can pay off all our mortgages and use the second flat to make extra cash from renting it out (instead of using the rent to make our monthly payments).

We’re doing this because it’s not easy getting by on one income in HK, especially now with inflation on the rise, food prices going up, etc. This does mean we have to rent now, but that’s okay. The chief issue will be finding some place that doesn’t cost much more than what we were already spending on mortgage payments. Which is a hard nut to crack in the H of K without resorting to public housing. Or moving to Tuen Mun.

We’ll probably end up staying in Disco Bay, despite the fact that technically we no longer need to take advantage of its dog-friendly policy. In fact, weirdly, our two best options so far are in the same high-rise, one floor above us. One is even the same layout.

But we haven’t made a deal yet. We saw 12 flats today, and the ones with the best view were also the smallest and most inconveniently located. (One was also possibly being used to hide a body. Great view of the marina, mind.) We hoped to settle it today, but another client is outbidding us for the best choice, and the owner of the second choice is in Australia for the holidays, so we won’t know about that one until tomorrow.

So what I’m saying is, expect delays in the bloggery from time to time. We’ve got three weeks to find a place and move into it, so I may be spending my nights packing.

That is all. Queries welcome.

FUN FACT: Wherever we end up moving will be my sixth change of address in HK since I moved here 12 years ago.

I gotta move,
