Next on the official Def Halloween Countdown playlist, one of the best songs ever to feature decapitated Norwegian mercenaries: “Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner”, performed by Warren Zevon during his last-ever appearance on Letterman.
Everyone plays Zevon’s “Werewolves Of London” on Halloween, so I thought I’d go with this instead. No creepy video imagery to go with it, but the lyrics are more than enough to get the job done. Leave it to WZ to write a ghost story that references the Congo Wars, the CIA and Patty Hearst.
FUN FACT: “Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner” was the B-side to “Werewolves Of London”, and I wore out both sides of that 45. I’ve been a Zevon fan ever since.
That sonofabitch Van Owen,
This is dF
