Back when I was doing Bad Cover Version on a regular basis, one category that never came up was TV show themes. Admittedly, it’s not a popular category. Sure, every surf band that ever existed have done a version of Hawaii Five-0 or The Munsters, but apart from that, if yr recording a TV theme song, yr probably either doing it for a tribute album or a movie soundtrack. Or yr They Might Be Giants.

Anyway, seeing as how it’s the Year Of The Ox, I was considering posting the theme to Rawhide. But then I thought, “Which version should I post?”

Not an easy decision when the contenders are Frankie Lane, the Blues Brothers and Dead Kennedys.

On the other hand, only one of them has ever been combined with footage from a 1938 western with an all-midget cast.

Which is why YouTube was invented, of course.

FUN FACT: You could make movies like that in the 1930s. You’d probably never get away with it today.

Good vittles, love and kissin’,

ITEM [via Warren Ellis]: Here’s a collection of awesome photos by Sergei Larenkov, who took WW2-era photographs from Leningrad, reshot them in the present day from their original perspectives, and then blended them together.

Like so:

Which I mention chiefly because I recently finished Willam Gibson’s Spook Country, which – among other things – proposes that artists could combine GPS and virtual reality technologies to create “locative art”. Strap on a VR helmet with a GPS chip in it and you could see 3D recreations of historical events and people superimposed on the reality in front of you based on yr exact location in the GPS grid.

These photos strike me as an interesting example of what that might look like.

You are there,
