I GOT A (DENGUE) FEVER
Feb. 1st, 2009 12:39 pmYr new favorite band may just possibly be ...
Dengue Fever.
Who caught my interest because, despite being from LA, they draw their influence from the great lost Cambodian psychedelic rock singers of the early 70s like Ros Sereysothea and Sinn Sisamouth who were amomg the millions killed off by the Khmer Rouge.
Also, their lead singer, Chhom Ninol, is actually from Cambodia. She’s reasonably famous there, apparently.
Anyway, I have the Cambodian Rocks comp in regular rotation on the iPod, and it includes some of the best lo-fi garage rock you’ll find outside of the Nuggets collection. Dengue Fever seems to capture that spirit fairly well, without simply aping it.
Go to their MySpace page and listen for yrself. Or view this odd video:
Phnom Penh rocks,
