There’s a new spam scam in town from “Worldwide International Domain Registration” that goes something like this [boldface mine]:

“We are a professional Internet consultant organization in Asia, which mainly deal with the global companies’ domain name registration and internet intellectual property right protection. Currently, we have a pretty important issue needing to confirm with your company. On Mar 11, 2009, we received an application formally, one person named “Jacques Tits” wanted to applied for the Internet brand “[insert yr company name here]” and some domain names through our body.

During our preliminary investigation,we found that these domain names’ keyword and internet brand is identical with your trademark. I wonder whether you consigned "Jacques Tits" to register these domain names through us or not? Or is "Jacques Tits" your business partner or distributor in Asia?

And so on. The upshot is that if Jacques Tits is not in fact employed yr company, then Worldwide will award the domain to him in 15 days unless you act swiftly – and pay them $$$ to register yr domain name.

Obviously, I got this in my work inbox just now. I pegged it as a scam almost immediately. How did I know? Partly because I write about Internet security and scams as part of my day job. I also know how ICANN and domain name registration actually works.

The name “Jacques Tits” was a dead giveaway. They really should have picked another name. It just invites suspicion.

On the other hand, thanks to the wonder of spam, I now know that Jacques Tits is a real name. He’s an award-winning mathemetician from Belgium.

He has several theories named after him, like Tits Building, the Tits Alternative and the Tits group.

And you thought algebra was boring.

[Rim shot!]

BONUS MATERIAL: The chief research officer of anti-virus software company Norman had some fun teasing the Worldwide scammer last week. Not quite as funny as the 419 Eater site, but it’s worth a read if you like the details of scams like this.

And no “teasing Tits” jokes, please. We run a quality blog here.

Stop staring at my equations,
