I have a lot of songs on my iPod, many of which I’m just hearing for the first time (on account of I tend to download entire collections of MP3s and just let them circulate in shuffle mode, plus I have 7,142 songs on it, so it takes awhile to listen to them all).

This one popped up the other day.

You have to listen to it to appreciate it, but it’s basically the Crystals singing the same verse over and over with Phil Spector deadpanning the title: “Dance the screw.”

It struck me as a kind of surreal genius.

Then I learned the back-story behind it:

It’s basically a joke-revenge song Spector wrote, recorded with the Crystals and pressed a handful of copies, for the express purpose of sending one to Lester Sill, his former business partner at Philles Records, just to annoy him.

Which makes me like it even more, really.

One of these days I’m going to make a fan video for it.

Let’s do it,

Otherwise, where would all the gratuitous bikini babes hang out?

To say nothing of the tanning booths.

It’s just a small glowing object,
