People like to say that money isn’t important. On the other hand, try getting by without it. At least then you’ll know what it feels like to be an indie musician.

Or maybe not. Indie musicians are one of the few categories of people I can think of who not only don’t make all that much money to start with, but also are expected to turn down any chance to make more money – at least if it comes from a major label.

Liz Phair calls bullshit on that.



At least I think she is. It’s hard to tell from the verses. But I’ve always taken this song to mean that money is a benchmark of success for everyone, whether they want to admit it or not, and that includes art  – the one vocation where people respect you more if you make less.
