I am in a new branch office for Telephones! magazine. The office is located in an open field, but I have a desk and a phone and everything. I get settled in and it’s time for lunch. There are some magazines in my desk drawer so I take one. I go to a hotel bar and through the magazine, and only then do I notice its written in Vietnamese. The content seems very pro-gay – lots of homoerotic imagery.

At this point it becomes clear that I am actually in Vietnam for a technology conference being held in this hotel. Warren Ellis (the comics writer) is a guest speaker, on stage talking about technology and how digital photography is different from traditional photography and how you can render 3D images from 2D images without having to scan or take photos of an object from every angle.

After the demo I try to meet him but I lose him in the crowd. Finally I catch up with Warren – before I can say anything, someone comes up to him and asks him if he’s the bus driver for the Iowa-Vietnam Trade Committee tour group. He says no, and we exchange amused looks.

Later – I am sitting on a couch in the lobby reading one of Ellis’ novels. He is sitting next to me but I’m too shy to say anything, especially when I’m reading one of his books. It’s time to go anyway – KT is waiting with our bags, which we have to lug along a street with ancient cracked sidewalks. We need to flag down a taxi but we keep missing them.

And then I woke up.

Hitchin’ a ride,

This is dF
