As a journalist, I get press releases.

Sometimes they’re from George Lucas.

Lucasfilm Works with Prime Focus to Convert
Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace to 3D

~ Prime Focus Selected Following Exhaustive Testing ~

========================================================================

As yr no doubt aware, the 3D version was released earlier this year. And as promised, I went to go see it despite my better judgment telling me not to bother.

So … how was it?

Well … considering that (1) it’s The Phantom Menace, and (2) it’s the latest unnecessarily tweaked version of The Phantom Menace even before you include the 3D rendering, the main reason for me to go see it was to see if Lucasfilm could raise the bar for 3D conversion – a process that is better known these days as the reason most 3D films suck (at least as 3D experiences).

The answer is: Yes. Kind of.

I will say that Lucasfilm does get that 3D is supposed to be immersive, not things leaping out at the screen at you, and on that score the 3D is surprisingly subtle. And for the most part it manages to avoid the Viewmaster effect you often get with converted-3D.

The trade-off, of course, is that it adds absolutely nothing to the experience. It doesn’t make EP1:TPM any better to watch, or more fun (regardless of what you thought of it the first time). For kids who have now grown up on 3D films (imagine that), it’s probably expected, so now Lucasfilm will have something for the Post-3D generation to enjoy. But if you’ve already seen it, there’s no reason to see it again unless you want to see it in a theatre.

That goes for all six films, which I assume will all get 3D re-releases. I may go see the other five for that reason. Then again, I may just save my money for Episodes 4 and 5, the two films of the bunch I never tire of watching.

(Normally I would include Episode 6, but given the latest tweak, I don’t know if I can bring myself to watch it.)
