LISTEN TO IT #55: I WANNA BE YR VICAR
Aug. 14th, 2012 11:34 amGarage bands are a dime a dozen these days – which is good in terms of encouraging young people to pick up guitars and make some noise. But it does make it hard to stand out beyond yr local following, especially when the songs all sound basically the same.
Having a catchy name helps. Which brings us to Thee Vicars from the UK.
Granted, having “Thee” as a definite article isn’t original (see: Thee Headcoates, Thee Oh Sees, etc). But the “Vicars” part is a nice hook for me. And having listened to their current album I Wanna Be Your Vicar (note: catchy album title that plays on the band name also helps), I have to say I rather like them.
Without a doubt, they’re recycling the same formula established by a hundred 60s garage bands, but hey, what a formula. They may be emulating the past rather than building from it, but they do it well, and they’ve clearly done their homework.
Let’s listen to that title track:
Man of the cloth,
