Nick Cave and his Bad Seeds are back.

Well, most of them, anyway. Mick Harvey has left the group for "professional and personal" reasons. Possibly as a result (or possibly not), the new NC&BS album is almost a 180 from the primal rock swagger of Dig! Lazarus Dig!, resulting in Cave’s quietest album since The Boatman’s Call.

But “quiet” usually doesn’t mean “boring” or “sedate” where Cave is concerned. Push The Sky Away brims over with menacing melancholy. It’s the kind of album you’d want to listen to at 3:00 in the morning after a long day and a rough night, sitting on a balcony, drinking whiskey and staring down the moon until it blinks first.

In other words, it’s the first great record of 2013.

Oh, and John Hillcoat directed the video for the track “Jubilee Street”.

And it is NSFW.

Listen.

NPR has the whole album available for streaming at the moment if you’d like to listen for yrself.

Practice what they preach,
