When Joe Gideon and The Shark first hit the scene a few years ago with their debut, the comparisons to The White Stripes were inevitable – brother on guitar, sister on drums, etc. But of course the resemblance ended there – Joe Gideon and The Shark were not blues revivalists so much as minimalist art-rock storytellers. And more often than not, it worked a treat, though it took a few listens for me to get the album as a whole. 

Now they’re back with their sophomore album, Freakish. And like the first album, I think I’m going to need to give it time to grow on me. But there are some good songs on it to hook me in and keep me interested.

Interestingly, the lead-off single is not necessarily one of them, depending on how you feel about ELO-era vocoders.
