HUCKABEYONCE!
Jan. 27th, 2015 11:19 pmIt’s January 2015. The 2016 POTUS race is officially on. We know this because of two things:
1. Conservatives are campaigning in Iowa.
2. Fox News hosts are quitting their jobs to start pushing books.
I can’t say too much about the first one – not least because
bedsitter23 can cover the territory better than me.
However, the second one has raised what will be the most important issue that this nation will face when choosing the next POTUS and the future direction of America, and one I’m sure every candidate who drops by Iowa will have to address:
Where do you stand on the Beyonce problem?
Okay, I’m kidding. A little. But she does seem to be a central plank in Mike Huckabee’s exploratory bid for another POTUS campaign run – at least if you go by his appearance on The Daily Show.
The FaceTwitter has been a-buzz over the ass-kicking Jon Stewart handed him – although by “ass-kicking” they mean “played a Ted Nugent jam clip at him in the same way that Meet The Press doesn’t”.
It’s all schadenfreude, of course, and it’s telling that most people don’t realize this. Huckabee didn’t pick TDS out of a hat to go on and promote his book. He knew the kind of reception he’d get, and he got exactly what he wanted – to get Jon Stewart and liberals to say exactly what they’re saying now. He will now use that to rally the conservative Christian base.
I don’t think it will help is presidential aspirations. Then again, it may not hurt. When you look at who is knocking around in Iowa, I think Huckabee has at least as good a chance as Ted Cruz, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum at this stage – which is to say, not much, but better than characters like Ben Carson, Carly Fiorina and Sarah Palin.
Still, it’s hard to imagine him getting past the primaries. Bashing Beyonce isn’t really going to change that, if only because she’s sold more albums than Huckabee got votes when he ran in 2008.
As for Beyonce vs Ted Nugent …
Well, obviously it’s something of a double standard, and Stewart is right to point that out. It’s also interesting that Huckabee falls back on the “protect the kids” argument – which is one way of saying that no one under the age of 40 listens to Ted Nugent or attends his family-friendly concerts.
Fair point. On the other hand, the “protect the kids” argument has been recycled since the days when Tipper Gore was saying the same things about Prince and invented the Explicit Advisory sticker so that kids would know which albums were the good ones. And the PMRC was just as selective over who they applied their standards to as Huckabee is. So that’s a lazy argument.
But why not? Huckabee is only picking on Beyonce because Obama’s daughters like her. If it wasn’t for that hook, I don’t know that he would bother.
So I can't take any of this too seriously, really.
Love on top,
