Some of you may have come across the acronym SJW. You may even know what it means. I didn’t know until last week, when I came across two instances of angry men complaining about how they ruin things like (1) SF conventions and (2) yr chances of winning First Prize in a student film festival.
"SJW" apparently stands for “social justice warriors”. And they are apparently making life very difficult for people who aren't SJWs. Because you know, if you think LGBTs, people of color, poor people and immigrants have a hard time, try being a straight white guy where everyone lays into you for not being a gay brown foreign person with no money.
Or something.
The two cases cited above are pretty instructive. The student filmmaker anecdote is fun not least because the only thing backing up his argument that SJWs unfairly robbed him of glory is the technical and creative brilliance of his film. Turns out it’s neither creative nor brilliant, or even well-edited. Which is a shame, because I have admiration for anyone who bothers to make a film, no matter how bad it is. But if yr going to brag about how great yr art is – especially whilst rubbishing someone else’s art – you kind of need to be able to back that up.
As for the SF Convention guy, John Scalzi has already typed out the major flaws in the guy’s premise – which is basically that SF is being ruined by SJWs who are preventing SF from being the inspirational engineering manual it’s allegedly supposed to be. As if the existence of one prevents the existence of the other. And as if Star Trek was always only about technology, and not about humanity at all.
Anyway, I learned something from all this:
1. “SJW” stands for “social justice warrior”.
2. SJWs are a convenient group to blame when yr art project sucks.
3. SJWs ruin everything for people who have no need for – and no real interest in – social justice.
Just us,
This is dF
