edit - okay, "dynamics" is what I was looking for, that is missing in Gloria's version and that Soft Cell does better than any other version. As in the kind of dynamics the piano teacher endeavors to get into some of her utterly unmusical students - loud, soft, fast, slow, in order to get the FEELING across. ~not that the other versions don't have dynamics (though Gloria's is missing some in the instruments as I said) but I think Soft Cell got them so perfect that change, while interesting, is not an improvement.
