ITEM: China has set aside three parks during the Olympics to allow people to demonstrate. But the parks are empty and those who apply for permission to protest are even finding themselves arrested.
This is from the BBC, but our local TV station did a similar story – they met one of the applicants Tuesday before he was called in for an application “review”. He hasn’t been heard from since. A coincidence, I’m sure.
Meanwhile, the BBC has been also measuring just how much freedom journalists have. According to Rupert Wingfield-Hayes, they actually do have much more than they used to – but they also send minders with you to glower at locals who get any ideas about actually talking to you.
It says a lot when this actually counts as progress.
Shut up and enjoy the games,
This is dF
