LISTEN TO IT #3: MY LOVE IS PSYCHEDELIC

defrogI’ve been a fan of Love Psychedelico pretty much since their first album was released around a decade ago. Musically they’ve always been stuck in the 1970s, but they also stand out from the J-Pop pack thanks in part to lead singer Kumi, who not only mixes Japanese and English lyrics together, but also sings with a Yank accent (and without either the vocal histrionics or heliumesque cute vocals you typically get from J-Pop divas).
That said, the last few albums haven’t knocked me out that much, with the good song/filler ratio starting to balance in favor of the latter. However, the new album, Abbott Kinney (named after a street in Santa Monica, CA – no idea why) reverses that trend.
Here’s a cut that makes the case that Love Psychedelico still has plenty of life left in them.
