You probably don’t need me to tell you that The White Stripes have officially called it quits.

And it’s probably no surprise. With at least two side projects already to his name (The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather) and a record company to run, Jack White did kind of seem ready to move on, and their farewell statement hinted that they’d probably taken the Stripes’ garage-blues motif as far as they could take it over the last 13 years, and it was better to preserve the legacy while it was still worth preserving.

At least until the inevitable reunion tour ten years from now.

Anyway, it’s been an interesting run for one of the most improbably successful bands in American rock, even though my impression is that they owe more of their success to the UK than to America per se. There was always arguments over whether they deserved success by ripping off old blues songs and garage rock, but that was never an issue for me – rock has always been derivative, particularly with the blues, and TWS were more respectful of their source material than, say, Led Zeppelin.

And of course there’s Meg White. Some people complained about her drumming being too simple, but as Nick Knox will tell you, it’s not a question of virtuosity but of style and chemistry. And I would argue that Meg was one of those few drummers so integral to the band and the music that it would be unthinkable to replace her with anyone else.

As this clip proves.

See?

Dead leaves and the dirty ground,
