One of the highlights of growing up in the 1970s was going over to yr friend’s house and listening to 45s on a cheap plastic record player – usually the same two or three songs over and over again.

Every time I went over to Brian Burwell’s house, this record (which I think was his older sister’s) got a lot of plays.



It sounds corny now, of course (to say nothing of the band name). But when yr nine years old and growing up on Quinn Martin productions, yr going to be impressed by songs telling stories about a shootout between cops and gangsters in Chicago.

In that sense, Paper Lace was my first gangsta record.

Ha ha. Okay, not really. But I do think it was songs like this that cemented an appreciation for songs with narratives rather than the usual lovey-dovey stuff.
