People often ask me why I just can’t take the Republican Party seriously – at least when compared to the Democratic Party. When I (1) remind them that I have no love for either group and (2) ask them why I should take the GOP seriously, the usual response is: “Because the Democrats are spending us to the poor house and the GOP at least stands for some level of fiscal responsibility.”
Which is when I usually just chuckle and walk away. I’m not paid to argue with fools, diehards or the mentally ill, and I don’t have a burning desire to prove my opinion is right. Sure, I could whip out, say, these charts here, or these charts over there.
But why go to that effort when Republicans make my point for me by doing what they always do when they say they’re going to get all tough on spending: target the easy, politically motivated things that won’t save all that much money but will make their conservative voter base happy.
You know: PBS. Planned Parenthood funding. Unions.
Obama’s teleprompter.
This is my favorite part:
I can help there. A decent teleprompter costs around $3,500. I Googled that. Took something like 10 seconds (but then I have broadband).
To be fair, every Republican in the House was tacking on amendments, so – considering they can only cut so many items before they start cutting programs that affect them personally – by the time they got around to Womack there probably weren’t that many items left to put his name on.
Still, as politically motivated budget cuts go, it doesn’t get much more blatant than that.
Make me an offer,

More than 400 amendments were filed Monday night. Among them were a proposal from Rep. Steve Womack, R-Ark., to eliminate funding for the president's Teleprompter and one from Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Texas, to strip funding for the alteration, repair or improvement of the executive residence of the White House
This is my favorite part:
Womack told Fox News Tuesday afternoon that he pulled his amendment because he wasn't able to get an estimate on how much it would save.
