defrogIf yr going to start a band that patterns itself on old-school Stax-era R&B and Howlin’ Wolf blues, you probably couldn’t come up with a better name than Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears.
I’ve been listening to their second full-length LP Scandalous, and while it doesn’t break new ground, BJL&THB cover old ground with style and flair – even when Lewis is singing about UFOs leading the band to a desert brothel where it costs more than $20 to get yr ham glazed.

The James-Brown-wannabe comparisons from earlier songs are probably inevitable, though personally I think BJL&THB sound like they’re using the Blues Brothers band more than the JBs as their starting point. And like a lot of bands looking to re-create the past, they seem like a better proposition live than on record.
Still, I’m digging it for the moment.
