You’ve all heard the one about Todd Akin, who explained how women cannot get pregnant when they are raped by real rapists (as opposed to being raped by yr date, which is not rape if he bought you dinner first, or if you wore anything more revealing than a muumuu). This is SCIENCE!
As an American citizen I am required by law to comment on this. But it’s hard to think of what to say about it without resorting to the obvious (rape bad) or bad partisan slogans (WAR ON WOMEN!).
I can say that I’m constantly amazed at how bad conservatives are at confronting the issue of rape, from Clayton Williams suggesting rape victims make the most of the experience to Pete DeGraaf’s “spare tire” argument for health insurance coverage.
Obviously I have no clue what these people are thinking when they say this kind of stuff. I tend to assume it’s a by-product of the GOP’s decision to embrace hardcore “no-exceptions” political and religious ideologies – and their constant battle to make them sound reasonable and fair and humane when they clearly aren’t.
For example, the general GOP mantra of “no abortion ever for any reason” sounds great on paper, but it’s very hard to square that with the traumatic reality of carrying a rape-child to term and raising it without sounding like a self-righteous, uncaring jerk – especially when you’ve also styled yrself as the party of Sexual Morality and Personal Responsibility as dictated by Our Lord Jesus Christ, in which True Love waits, and anyone who doesn’t wait has no one but themselves to blame if they get pregnant (except maybe God, and who are you to question His decision to bless you with a rape baby who will grow up to be famous gospel singer), so why should we fund yr abortions or pay for yr contraceptives, slut?
Little wonder they’re constantly arguing themselves into corners with medieval science and then explaining what they were trying to say was that women lie about being raped all the time just to get free tax-funded abortions.
I’m sure in some cases it’s also a product of Old School Manly Man Sexism fromdouchebags guys who think they’re charming as hell and somehow therefore entitled to fuck any woman who shows the slightest interest, especially if they buy them dinner, and don’t think that a woman has a right to lead you on and then cockblock you (the bitches!).
And so on.
But that’s not in itself a conservative trait – lots of guys think this way regardless of political persuasion (sadly).
Anyway, it’s just baffling to me how any reasonable person would see a need to classify rape into categories of “legitimate” vs “stuff that people say is rape but isn’t as bad as rape”. I don’t care what the situation is – no means no. And I don’t much care for people who try and spin that for personal and/or political gain.
That said, I do find it hilarious that Mitt Romney is irritated that Team Obama and everyone else are harping on this and won't let him talk about the economy. Poor lamb.
I get that he doesn’t like being associated with Akin’s weird rape opinions. On the other hand, his running mate is Paul “Rape is just another way to get pregnant” Ryan.
And while I personally don’t believe that any given politician should be held accountable for batshit things other people say just because they’re in the same party, when said party is becoming increasingly known for the antics of its Batshit Wing, it’s unrealistic to pretend that people aren’t concerned about that – especially when one of them is Charlie Crist. Mitt might as well say, “"Let's not talk about all the crazy people in my party. Let's talk about how they're going to help me fix the economy."
FULL DISCLOSURE: I have a number of female friends that have been victims of “non-legit” rape as well as the “legit” kind. So I fully admit I’m a little biased here. Sue me.
Boys who rape should all be destroyed,
This is dF
