defrogAs you may know, we’ve just lost a major 20th century female icon who was a polarizing figure but so ubiquitous and recognizable during her prime that even her hairstyle was iconic in itself.
No, not her. I mean Annette Funicello.
Okay, maybe Annette wasn’t that polarizing. But in a way she was – at least in terms of the square, wholesome Disney image she represented vs the whole 60s counterculture that actually defined the era. By the time Haight-Asbury, LSD and Vietnam protests kicked in, Annette was a relic of an innocent era that arguably never really existed in the first place.
On the other hand, she was the “hot one” in the Mickey Mouse Club (well, she was to me when I was watching reruns of MMC in 8th grade after school). And she was a pioneer of the beach-movie genre, which basically involved pop-rock cash-ins and gratuitous girls in bikinis. (And occasionally, acting.)
