Ever since the 70s, there’s been a sort of unofficial but strictly enforced cultural boundary between music and film. You can do one or the other, but never both. No one wants to hear Scarlett Johansson sing any more than they want to see Justin Timberlake act. There are exceptions, obviously. But for the most part, unless yr contracted by the Disney Channel, everyone’s expected to stay on one side of the fence.

Which brings us to David Lynch, who is on indefinite hiatus from the film business, and has been keeping busy mainly by pursuing his musical interests. I haven’t really had a chance to follow some of his recent musical work, apart from his Dark Night Of The Soul collaboration with Dangermouse, which I liked a lot. But his new album, The Big Dream, was sitting at a listening station in HMV, so I tried it out of curiosity.

And I have to say, I like it.

It does sound a lot like I expected.  It's sort of like driving on the interstate at 3am scanning the radio dial and discovering some weird radio station broadcasting oldies from a parallel universe. American innocence filtered through a hazy, murky nightmare amp.

Kind of like his films and Twin Peaks, in other words.

I do think you kind of have to like Lynch’s films to really get it. And it works better when he taps into that ghostly rockabilly vein rather than dreamy electronica. And Lynch’s nerdy voice alone will probably put some people off. So it’s not for everyone.

Still.

It’s not a great album, but it’s worth exploring.

Listen.
