I’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: Tinariwen have one of the most hardcore backstories in rock – Tuareg nomad warriors from Mali who play a local flavor of desert blues jams.
They’ve managed to build up an international following, to the point that their previous album featured guest appearances from members of Wilco, TV On The Radio and The Dirty Dozen Brass Band. And their new album, Emmaar, was actually recorded in Joshua Tree National Park – mainly because a Tuareg rebellion forced them to flee Mali. Also, one of the guitar players was kidnapped by Islam militants.
See? Hardcore.
Anyway, I’m really digging this. It’s been a slow year for new releases – at least for me. For some reason a lot of the albums I want to get aren’t available here yet. But this is the strongest contender yet for album of the year.
Listen.
On the run again,
This is dF
