50 STATES AND COUNTING: THE PLAYLIST

With DC statehood back in the news, I found myself looking around Spotify for songs about Washington DC – as you do – and found myself thinking about other songs that have the names of states in the title, and after coming up with about ten off the top of my head, I thought:

“Gee, I wonder if I could make a playlist featuring every state in the union?”

Turns out I can.

METHODOLOGY: The song had to have the name of the state in the title, without mentioning a city (so no “Portland, Maine” or “New York, New York”, for example). I also tried to avoid compilations or album projects that deliberately recorded songs about each state. The opening track is as close as I got to breaking that rule.

As you might imagine, some states were more difficult than others. For example, there are 10,000 songs with “California” in the title, while there are maybe five with “Rhode Island” (and most of them are about chickens).

That said, New York was probably the hardest one of the lot – statistically, 99.999999% of songs with “New York” in the title are about the city, not the state.
