You may have noticed a certain persistent theme in the songs we’ve been selecting for the playlist that could probably be described as “Bah! Humbug!” That’s mainly because I’m a cynical bastard who can’t help noticing that we can only muster up a “Peace On Earth, Goodwill Towards Men” mentality for just one day out of 365. Sure, that’s because I’m Mr Negativity, but the point still stands.
Anyway, some of us can’t even scrape together goodwill even for that long, which is kind of the theme of our next song: “Christmas Eve Can Kill You” by the Everly Brothers, the story of how hitchhiking on Christmas Eve sucks when no one stops to give you a ride.
Available on the Stories We Could Tell album.
Of course, by the time the Everlys recorded this in the early 70s, they were in a pretty bad mood. They were tired of playing their oldies hits and they pretty much couldn’t stand each other – they broke up a year later, in fact, when Phil smashed his guitar onstage and walked off, leaving Don to finish the set alone. Still, that’s Christmas in a nutshell for lots of families.
Too grim? Well, that’s why I posted this one and not Black Box Recorder’s “Child Psychology”. Cos Luke Haines makes me look like a fucking jolly old elf in comparison. Which is why I’m a fan, probably.
Batteries not included,
This is dF
