Continuing our coverage of cover songs throughout history:

THE SONG:
“Polk Salad Annie”

THE ORIGINAL: Tony Joe White

COMMENTS: The song itself is classic swamp rock fused with white soul, and Tony Joe White’s voice just seems to take you right into the heart of rural Louisiana. His opening exposition alone is the stuff of legend. Not to mention the random grunts.

THE COVER: Elvis Presley

COMMENTS: Well, he is the King. And the story goes that Elvis was such a huge fan of the song that he wanted to take a crack at it himself. Based on the video evidence, he does all right, though I’m deducting points for using crib sheets to remember the lyrics. That said, bonus points for hip shakin’, and for pioneering microphone fellatio 12 years before Lux Interior.

WINNER: Tony Joe White. Elvis makes a good attempt, but fails to steal watermelons out of Tony Joe’s truck patch, if you see what I’m saying.

This week's rat entry [via Pink Tentacle]: Omocha-Bako Series, Dai-3-Wa: Ehon 1936 (Toy Box Series, Episode 3: Picture Book 1936), a 1934 Japanese propaganda cartoon about an island of peace-loving dolls and cats who are invaded by an army of evil Mickey Mouse clones riding bats.

Ironically, of course, Disney would later go on to inspire post-war manga. Still, I think we’ve all felt that way about Mickey Mouse sometimes.

The full video is here if yr interested.

Death from above,
