HEAVY WEATHER 2008: FENGSHEN!

Our next Typhoon No. 1 warning signal this year is courtesy of Typhoon Fengshen, which just decimated the Philippines – 229 dead so far, and the toll is likely to go up, as the storm also capsized a ferry with 750 people on it.


If it stays on course, it’ll miss us, but typhoons go where the mood takes them, so you never know. To be honest, though, it’d be nice if it sent some wind and rain our way – we’ve been pushing the 34ºC mark since Thursday.

But like Richard Perle likes to say these days, be careful what you wish for, etc. Especially since it's likely to hit the China coast, and they've got enough flooding problems as it is – which, apparently, is the fault of the Olympic mascots.

GEORGE CARLIN, HE DEAD

Aw damn. Just saw this.

This is one of those few celebrity deaths that connect with me on some level. I had pretty much all of his comedy albums from the 70s and 80s, and I listened to them so often I had them memorized. I also got to see him live in Nashville around 1990 or so, making him the first stand-up comic I ever paid money to see. He was funny, but he also had something to say, and he was easily one of the biggest influences on my world view. Namely: fuck censorship, we’re all doomed, and that's funny.

Anyway, my favorite fact about Carlin is that his “Filthy Words” routine (which is not the same as his “Seven Words You Can’t Say On Television” routine, but is a follow-up to that one) resulted in the FCC ruling that said legally, you can broadcast “indecent” material between the “safe harbor” hours of 10pm and 6am.

For all the good it did us.

Still, I do have an MP3 of Carlin appearing on Dennis Miller’s cable show around 1999, and his first words: “Finally I get to be on a show where you can say ‘cocksucker’. Isn’t that great?”
