Good morning, sinners.

By the way, the world ends today. So you might want to get yr affairs in order.

Naturally, CERN has plenty of proof that the LHC will NOT in fact create a black hole that will swallow the Earth. But what do a bunch of egghead scientists know?

Look on the bright side: you won’t have to worry about a McCain/Palin presidency.

Whatever. So long as we don’t end up getting overrun by giant spiders. I will not have that on my planet.

ITEM: If you’ve ever wondered why flies are so hard to kill, Scientists at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) have yr answer: flies have a quick-fire intelligence and are good at planning ahead.

Flies can quickly calculate the location of the threat and an escape plan. Within 100 milliseconds of spotting the swatter they can move their bodies into a position that allows an extension of the legs to save them.

Says Caltech Professor Michael Dickinson:

"When it first notices an approaching threat, a fly's body might be in any sort of posture depending on what it was doing at the time, like grooming, feeding, walking, or courting. Our experiments showed that the fly somehow 'knows' whether it needs to make large or small postural changes to reach the correct preflight posture."

In other words, to kill the fly, you have to think faster than the fly.

So get out there and kick some fly ass.

It’s all in the reflexes,

Now that John McCain has created a Truth Squad to debunk all 5,000 rumors about Sarah Palin currently circulating the Internetz, now is as good a time for me to introduce you (or re-introduce, whichever applies) to the best friend you’ll ever have in this election: the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg Public Policy Center, which runs FactCheck.org.

Which is worth mentioning partly because people won’t stop circulating the “Sarah Palin Banned Book List” (which was debunked a long time ago), and partly because there’s absolutely no reason to trust John McCain to straighten things out. FactCheck tends to be very good at digging for the facts and verifying them (you know, like the media used to do at some point). More importantly, they don’t choose sides.

And they’ve compiled a list of a number of Palin memes that are either false or misleading. I highly recommend reading it. Then you should explore the rest of the site.

DISCLAIMER: None of this should be mistaken as an endorsement for McCain/Palin. But I do firmly believe in an informed electorate. Also, just because the GOP keeps those “Obama is probably Muslim” memes in circulation, that doesn’t make it okay for Democrats to go around claiming that Palin burned books in Wasilla. “I swear, if Karl Rove jumped off the Empire State Building,” etc etc.

Besides, there are so many other awesome and reasonably true reasons not to vote for a McCain/Palin ticket.

For one thing, that’s not actually her in the bikini rifle pic. See, I could respect that. (Wouldn’t convince me to vote Republican. But I’d respect it, sure.)

Ain't it the truth,
